1935 - Las Vegas

A bond election for $163,000 was held on December 8, 1935 for the construction of a new grammar school. The school was built on the site of the Junior High school, which was destroyed by fire on May 11, 1934. The bond issue passed 381 to 61. Under the PWA, the school district received an outright grant from the federal government of approximately $67,000, making the entire structure actually costing the taxpayers less than $100,000.

Note: The Public Works Administration (PWA) U.S. government agency (1933 – 39). It was established as part of the New Deal in response to the Great Depression to reduce unemployment through the construction of highways and public buildings. The PWA funded the construction of more than seventy percent of the new schools built nationwide during that time.
