The late 1950s and early 1960s The population grew due to increased activity at Nellis Air Force Base, hotel construction on the Las Vegas Strip, research at the Nevada Test Site and ongoing work at the industrial complex in Henderson. This led to increased school enrollment and a high turnover in the schools. The nurse to pupil ratio during this time inhibited the effective delivery of health services.
In addition to providing health education and first aid services, state law required that nurses screen children for health problems. Nurses monitored height and weight twice a year, screened for vision, hearing and dental problems and worked to detect other health concerns. Screenings included referrals for medical services and follow-up.
Parent volunteers often helped the school nurse with screening. Head lice screening required follow-up to teach about detection, treatment and elimination of lice. Nurses did tuberculin tests for lunchroom workers and held immunization clinics in cooperation with the County Health Department.
