   Kermit Roosevelt Booker, Sr., one of eleven children, was born on January 25, 1906 in Lexington, Missouri. He graduated from Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri and Pittsburgh State Teacher College, receiving his Master's Degree in 1954. In 1955, he and his family moved to Las Vegas and he taught at Madison School until illness forced him to retire. He died October 5, 1966. Mr. Booker was a man dedicated to the community. He worked with boys in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Trailblazers. In 1959, he received the Silver Beaver Award in scouting in Las Vegas.

    Booker Elementary school became a Sixth Grade Center as part of the court-ordered Integration Plan. In 1993, it became a Prime 6 School and has earned high honors for student achievement. Booker was one of the first Empowerment Schools in 2007. This happened at the same time as the facility was demolished and a new school was built with an original school design. The school has achieved AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) from 2006-2011. The school has won the Martin Luther Parade competition several times and also won the African American Jeopardy Bowl. Traditions include the Junior Cotillion and the Gents and Lads Banquet. Booker has several community partnerships including Mark L. Fine Assoc., the Silver Nugget Casino, the Summerlin Rotary and others.

*Vegas Heights Elementary was built in 1945 and is the original site used by Highland Elementary School (1954) and Booker Elementary School (2007).
